To survive in the ever-evolving designscape, it is imperative to
continuously experiment and straddle divergent design trends. Architects
Gabriele & Oscar Buratti, along with engineer Ivano Battistonm seem to be
attuned with these two creative tenets, as their firm Buratti + Battiston
Architects not only designs offices, shops, apartments and villas, but are
also responsible for some of the most thoughtful furniture and furnishings.
Case in point, the rather imaginative W+W washbasin with toilet.****
The W+W is a collaborative effort between Buratti + Battiston Architects
and Roca Innovation Lab. The core of the W+W lies in combining the two
essential elements of the bathroom, i.e. the toilet and the washbasin.
Thus, as you can see, the W+W is not only highlighting multi-functionality,
but also touches on the realm of eco-consciousness. The W+W remains
faithful to Roca’s new ‘water-reuse’ technology, as it uses waste water
from the basin to fill the WC cistern, thus reducing water usage by up to
25% compared to a standard 6/3 liter dual-flush WC. This statistic alone
should get the W+W many takers, as it is seldom one comes across
utilitarian objects, that embraces an eco-friendly approach so
unequivocally.
Roca’s all-in-one washbasin and WC is a design revelation and thankfully
the creative team hasn’t gone overboard with the actual form factor.
Straight lines, minimalistic aesthetics and simple styling define the W+W
and the Zen like design approach goes well with the current trend of the
holistic bathroom culture. The material of choice is high-quality vitreous
china and the W+W is also fitted with the Singles-Pro tap, which helps in
conserving water. The tap is equipped with a progressive cartridge, that
prevents the heating system from firing up immediately, as it starts the
water flow from cold, to tepid and then hot. The tap not only conserves
energy, but also includes a flow limiter, which restricts the water flow to a
maximum of 9 liters per minute.
The W+W is the perfect amalgamation of form and function and every design
decision has been well thought out. Take for instance the decision to equip
it with two basins – the basin waste and one further down the waste pipe.
This not only maintains hygiene but also helps in reducing wastage. So how
does the two basin system work? Well, once the basin has been used and
filled with water, you can either divert it to the mains (e.g. if the basin
is being used for shaving, or brushing teeth), or recycle it by storing it
in the cistern ready for the next flush. The recycled water is also
filtered and treated and the reservoir is able to hold up to 4 liters of
water.
With the W+W, Roca along with Buratti + Battiston Architects reiterate
their commitment to sustainability, functionality and aesthetic design.
Not only is the W+W a successful creative experiment, but also highlights how
progress can be achieved without sacrificing functionality
Straight lines, minimalistic aesthetics and simple styling define the W+W and the Zen like design approach goes well with the current trend of the holistic bathroom culture.
