The Queen Of England will soon welcome some new neighbors who are all set to upstage British
Royalty. Indian Billionaire family (once the wealthiest in Britain after the Queen) the Hindujas
have moved in next door to the Queen and they are doing this with great pomp and show. The
Hindujas who boast of a $9.61 billion fortune will move into the six-story residence on Carlton
House Terrace, which is adjacent to the Buckingham Palace.
When it comes to splurging, the billionaire family is unapologetically lavish, since they have
spent over $160 million on restoring the once derelict mansion! The palatial property is steeped in
history and was originally commissioned by King George IV in the 1820s, making both the location
and the property highly covetable. With skyrocketing real estate rates in the UK especially
London, this purchase is being seen as a pièce de résistance by the family, who seem to have
established a permanent place among the movers and shakers of Great Britain.
The spectacular residence is every design aficionado’s delight and is testimony to British
architecture. Located on Carlton Terrace, the mansion has six floors, fifty rooms and is spread over
a staggering 70,000 sq. ft. The property has the distinction of being the largest Grade-1 home in
London and also includes luxury amenities like a private cinema, swimming pool, dining room,
marble floors, Honduran mahogany paneling and Italian chandeliers. One will also find Eastern
influences like Indian touches, such as elephant motifs on the doors , making the restoration
project the ideal amalgamation of the West and the East.
The director for London of English Heritage, Paddy Pugh, told the Sunday Times newspaper, "I
can't think of another domestic restoration project on this scale with buildings of this importance,"
adding, "Rarely have we seen such opulence allied to such craftsmanship."
The $160 million mansion is the ultimate emblem of power and wealth, to the Hindujas. The fact
that the mansion is just a stone throw away from the iconic Buckingham Palace only adds to the
mystique and aura of the Hinduja name. Nonetheless, this purchase will have London fine
society talking for years, as it is not often you build a mansion right next to the Queen’s palace.
