TV personality, interior designer and creator of the Angelo:HOME furniture
collection (www.angelohome.com) Angelo Surmelis tells Realeluxury.com he was
always fascinated with spatial interaction. “My Mom tells a funny story that I tried
to move around the walls of my crib.” Having hosted the popular television series
“Clean Sweep” and “Rate My Space,” today he is one of L.A.’s “go to” designers.
He also has Playboy to thank for his big break.
Newly arrived in L.A. from Chicago, Surmelis was recommended to Playboy
Enterprises by a professional colleague to design a star-studded soiree of 500
guests at the Playboy Mansion. When he hesitated, his colleague told him, “This is
L.A. Nobody knows who you are and if you screw up, no one is going to give a
damn but if you hit one out of the park, you will never have to worry about work
again.” That is precisely what happened.
One of Surmelis’s mantras is “If you change your space, you change the way you
live.” He adds that nothing lasts longer than true classic design, which he likes to
compliment with a fresh new approach. He says there are three design basics
that can be used to create a room with real pizzazz. “Think about color and
setting. It will change the way you feel about your home but know that the same
color on the west coast may look different on the east coast. Then think about
scale. You can have the most beautiful piece of furniture but if it is not the
appropriate scale in the room, it can throw everything off.
Lastly consider how light is used in the room. If you have done all the right things in
putting a wonderful room together and it is not beautifully lit, it will fall flat. Light
the room as if everything glows naturally, as if it is continually being lit by the sun.
In the movie business they call this the Goddess hour.
