Christies: Portrait of a Premiere Auction House By Karen Jones
|
Christies is not just a world-renowned auction house with a glamorous
mystique, it is a multi-billion dollar art industry. Famous for handling
top tier collections of art, antiques, collectibles and more. Christies
offers over 450 auctions a year in a staggering array of categories.
Founded in 1766 by James Christie, it has offices in 30 countries and 10
showrooms including New York, London, Paris, Geneva and Dubai.
Collections can be put up for sale at auction for any number of reasons
says Heather Barnhart, U.S. Regional Director at Christies. However, she
offers that it is usually because one of the “4 ‘Ds’—death, divorce, debt or
discretionary selling.”
Auction houses generally act as agents by putting buyers together with
sellers. At Christies both can connect through detailed classifications that
include everything from paintings, jewelry, fashion and furniture to wine,
watches and even private islands. Better yet, showrooms are open to
the public to come in and browse a collection prior to its auction, says
Barnhart, “We have the friendliest doorman in New York City. There is no
barrier to entry. Anyone is welcome. We have museum quality objects
that people can sit on, pick up and touch.”
